Marty, seine Freundin Jennifer und Doc Brown reisen in das Jahr 2015, wo durch einen Zwischenfall Martys Familie ruiniert werden würde. Dies kann jedoch von Marty verhindert werden. Der Biff aus dem Jahr 2015 konnte derweil die Zeitmaschine stehlen und mit ihr ins Jahr 1955 reisen, wo er seinem früheren Ich einen Sportalmanach übergeben kann. Anschließend reist er in das Jahr 2015 zurück und stirbt dort.
Als Marty, Jennifer und Doc aus der Zukunft ins Jahr 1985 zurückkehren, finden sie eine Parallelwelt vor, in der Biff unter Zuhilfenahme des Sportalmanachs durch das Gewinnen von Sportwetten reich und mächtig werden konnte. Marty findet heraus, dass Biff den Sportalmanach an dem Tag erhalten hat, an dem er im ersten Teil seine Familie wiederhergestellt hat. Anschließend reisen Marty und Doc Brown zu diesem Datum zurück, um Biff den Almanach abzunehmen.
Marty kann dort den Sportalmanach in seinen Besitz bringen. Bevor er jedoch in das Jahr 1985 zurückkehren kann, wird die Zeitmaschine, in der Doc Brown sitzt von einem Blitz getroffen, was ihr Verschwinden zu Folge hat. Marty erfährt schließlich durch einen von Doc Brown geschriebenen Brief, dass der Blitz einen Zeitsprung ausgelöst und Doc Brown mitsamt der Zeitmaschine in das Jahr 1885 befördert hat.
