Die Serie „Outlander“ basiert auf der Buchreihe (in Deutschland als „Highland-Saga“ veröffentlicht) von Bestseller-Autorin Diana Gabaldon und handelt von Claire, einer pragmatischen und sehr unabhängigen Krankenschwester, die im Zweiten Weltkrieg im Kampfgebiet arbeitet und als Hobbybotanikerin in Naturheilkunde sehr bewandert ist. Sie gerät nach Kriegsende während eines Urlaubs mit ihrem Ehemann Frank in den schottischen Highlands versehentlich durch einen alten Steinkreis ins Jahr 1743 – und damit in die Zeit des Zweiten Jakobitenaufstands, der vom englisch-besetzten Schottland aus einen Wechsel auf dem britischen Königsthron anstrebte.
