Will Kane (Gary Cooper) war viele Jahre Sheriff einer kleinen Stadt im Wilden Westen. Nun ist die Zeit gekommen sich zur Ruhe zu setzen, was auch von seiner Frau Amy (Grace Kelly) begrüßt wird. Während ihm ein schöner Abschied gemacht wird, erreicht ihn die Nachricht, daß der Mörder Frank Miller mit Freunden in die Stadt kommen wird, um sich an Kane zu rächen. Obwohl er eigentlich außer Dienst ist, weigert sich Kane, die Stadt zu verlassen und vor der Bedrohung zu fliehen. Doch seine Suche nach Hilfe in der Stadt bleibt ergebnislos, alle Mitbürger sind zu feige. Auch Amy ist nicht erfreut darüber, daß Kane die Herausforderung annehmen will. Und so steht Will Kane allein da, als um zwölf Uhr mittags die Banditen in die Stadt einreiten...
