Eine Gruppe von Hackern um den Mastermind Greg Pope hat sich den 4. Juli – den Independence Day – ausgesucht, um Amerika den tödlichen ultimativen Schlag zu verpassen: Das Computer- und Kommunikationsnetz, von dem die gesamte Wirtschaft der Vereinigten Staaten abhängt, soll am Unabhängigkeitstag ausgeschaltet werden. Schnell stellt sich heraus, dass gegen den Hightech-Terror nur ein Kraut gewachsen ist, nämlich Old-School-Cop John McLane. Wieder ist er zur falschen Zeit am falschen Ort und wird in die Geschehnisse verwickelt, als er Hacker-Greenhorn Matt Foster abliefern will – eine Aufgabe, die sich als alles andere als einfach herausstellt. Als sich die Terroristen auch noch McLanes Tochter Lucy als Geisel greifen, scheint das Eisen für den stresserprobten Detective zunächst zu heiß zu werden…
