Der Farbige Carl Brashear (Cuba Gooding Jr.) möchte seinen Traum von einer Karriere als Marinetaucher verwirklichen. Sein Vater, ein armer Landarbeiter, unterstützt ihn, indem er ihm immer wieder sagt: "Gib niemals auf und sei der Beste von allen". Das versucht Carl auch umzusetzen, als er endlich nach zwei Jahren von der Navy eine Zusage für die Tauchschule erhält. Carl hat es jedoch als Farbiger nicht einfach.
