„NCIS: Los Angeles“ zeigt die Fälle des Office of Special Projects, einer Undercover-Einheit des NCIS (Naval Criminal Investigative Service ), das in Los Angeles beheimatet ist. Dieses setzt sich zumeist mit Bedrohungen der Sicherheit der Vereinigten Staaten auseinander. Angeführt von den Agenten Callen und Hanna ermittelt das Team in Fällen, in denen Mitglieder der Navy verwickelt sind. Dabei übernimmt die Departement-Managerin Henrietta „Hetty“ Lange eine gewisse Mutterrolle: Mit strenger Hand sorgt sie aus dem Hintergrund dafür, dass die Arbeit voran geht und effektiv bleibt, wenn es nötig ist kann sie jedoch auch mit seelischen Streicheleinheiten, Annekdoten zur Auflockerung und Lebensweisheiten die Agenten wieder aufbauen. Ihren Sinn für Humor lässt sie dabei meist nur bei Gesprächen unter vier Augen durchscheinen.
