Die Welt steht am Rande des Dritten Weltkrieges, als ein russischer Nationalistenführer einen Atomraketenstützpunkt in seine Gewalt bringt. Um notfalls einen nuklearen Gegenschlag führen zu können, wird die USS Alabama unter der Führung der gegensätzlichen Offiziere Ramsey und Hunter in russische Gewässer entsandt. Schon bald wird klar, daß die beiden überhaupt nicht miteinander können, und unter dem Druck der Ereignisse kommt es auf der USS Alabama zu Meuterei und Gegenmeuterei.
